After exchange of the include-directory from 5.03 to 5.03b1 i was able to add extra contents in the dropdowns.

When i install the 'editible text' in a menu i can afterwards change the long Lorem-ipsum-Text to 'Test' or <hr> etc. and save it.

When i load the page afterwards everything is ok - just test or  a line in the dropdown. After the  log out the long lorem ipsum text appears again.

Similar it is with other extra-contens. They should be editable sowhow and have a helpfile how the are used.

Is it because of the beta - there is no public or private.

Changes to Extra Content Areas also need to be 'published' in order to be seen by regular visitors (that's since Typesetter 5.0 if I remember correctly).

Doesn't the Admin Top Bar indicate the unpublished Extra Areas?
What does the list view say? (Admin Toolbox -> Content -> Extra Content)

Sorry - i  did not recognize the publish - area . I looked at the tree. But most of the extracontent is not editable (edit is gray) , and it is difficult to find out how an image or a file is included (documentation).

Other examples : Compass Nav" {{north_link_text}} {{east_link_..." ; or :  Selectable Size"{{heading}}{{text}}..."

May i propose a help-icon in the Options of the first public beta.

True - Extra Content Areas are somewhat special. They evolved from initially being "Editable Text" only–which can still be edited in the Admin Page context– to the current state where basically any section type is possible. Most section types require their custom editor components which are only available in (and solely made for) the WYSIWYG editing context on a page.

With the new, rather special case where Extra Content Areas may be added to a menu, editing them may be difficult, depending on the menu behavior.
I agree in that this feature breaks a bit with the easy-to-use Typesetter paradigm - that's why there is the warning notice when adding them.

If a submenu doesn't have a persistent 'open' state but only shows on hover, the only way to edit such a non-text Extra Area will be to place it in an unused layout assigned to a private page.
This is truly a situation where our WYSIWYG inline editing comes to its limits and I'm far from being happy with such solutions. On the other hand, I can't imagine a better way to accomplish arbitrary content inside menus using our current tools and possibilities without custom code or fundamental changes to the CMS core.

Note  for anyone wondering: that's one of the demo types of the not yet released CustomSections developer plugin.

Compass Nav–like most other CustomSections demo types–need to be edited+saved once to have a static content.
This behavior can be changed in several ways, depending on the section type's final purpose. CustomSections do not necessarily have static content at all, it's really up to the developer to decide what it does in the end.

Compass Nav is really only a demo, not meant to be used in production without custom adaptions. Its purpose is to A) introduce the Knob 'extra control' and B) to illustrate how to integrate 3rd-party libraries (CircleType, FitText.js and Lettering.js in this case).
