So, from what I can tell, the "start" page is the first menu item.  Since clicking the logo also brings one to the start page, I don't want to explicitly have in the menu "home" as an option.  The best I can do right now is leave the label blank, but that still leaves an annoying highlighted square on the blank menu label when the visitor is on the home page.

Hi Andrew,

There are a couple of possible solutions:

You could hide the first link with css:

.navbar-fixed-top .nav > li:first-child{
    display:none;
}

Or, you could create alternate menu in the Page Manager admin page then use it for the top navigation.

  1. Navigate to the Page Manager admin page (found under the "Content" heading of the admin toolbar.
  2. Select "Add New Menu" at the bottom of the page
  3. Construct a custom menu out of the pages you want displayed in your navigation
  4. Now, from the homepage again, right click on the top navigation and select "Edit"
  5. Under "Source Menu" select your new alternate menu and save
