why does gpeasy in a subfolder always takes me back to the siteroot? I have tried disabling htaccess and editing it as well but it doesn't make a difference. either it goes back to the site root or the message is that the page does not exist. I haven't faced this issue with other flatfile CMSs.

are you sure there isn't an htaccess somewhere interfering.  Every time I've had that problem it has been due to a htaccess.

I've tried renaming the htaccess files as well to stop any interference, but same results.

make sure the htaccess files aren't the problem--edit them and see what they say, make sure they are directed to the proper folder, check the index.php file also. Clear your browsers cache or test with a different browser that you haven't visited the site with. Sometimes it takes a little time for the htaccess to kick in or out.

Other than the htaccess and index.php I have no idea why or how you would be redirected. I just installed a copy in a subfolder on my localhost with no problems.
