It might be an improvement for some but i don't like the sticky editor interface
It covers the editable parts in the page.
I know you can slide it of screen but it makes selecting a new option very tedious
I'd rather have the floating one like in version 4.6.1
Hope you devs will reconsider this.
I hear you. It's a criticism I expected to hear at some point and I've been brainstorming ways to keep the editor from overlapping the edit area. A couple of ideas:
Hmm, yes, maybe keep floating as an option.
Moving parts of the page off-canvas is a no-go. Pages may be designed to use the entire horizontal space.
Shinking the page would be an option but it has the disadvantage that it will not trigger the correct mobile breakpoints, since - up to now - there is no way to declare a custom viewport size, neither in CSS nor JS.
Another idea - actually I thought of that already some time ago - what if we would capture a shortcut key to mimize/maximize the Admin UI elements.
In Photoshop for example, the tab key hides/shows all of the floating toolbars, libraries etc. Very very convenient.
Although tabulators are not relevant in HTML text, webbrowsers use it to focus input elements and anchors, so it's not the best choice here.
But maybe Ctrl + E or some other. I haven't yet checked which keys CKEditor already captures.
By minimizing/maximizing I would also iconize the Admin panel as well.
What do you think?
update: CKEditor captures several keyboard shortcuts. This page refers to CKE 3 but CKE 4 will not be much different, I'd guess.
Ctrl + E is not mentioned.
I don't think the floating edit area is going to happen. Before 5.0, there were two display options for the editing interface. The two options never worked well together and they were a chore to maintain.
The latest beta release contains a feature that should help keep the editable area out from behind the edit interface. If you try it out, please let me know how well it works.
A good solution in my opinion. Admittedly not ideal for themes which use the full viewport width, but most if not all currently available themes have limited content width.
Josh could you please trigger a window.resize event upon showing/hiding the editor area? For content types that listen to it, such as the Responsive Image section or my upcoming Parallax Image content type.
